A deadly crash involving a tractor-trailer and an SUV shut down part of Interstate 279 in Allegheny County on Tuesday after the truck crossed the highway median and struck an oncoming vehicle, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Investigators said the crash occurred on southbound I-279 in Ohio Township when the driver of a tractor-trailer lost control of the vehicle. The truck crossed the median and guide rail before entering the northbound lanes, where it collided with a Lincoln Navigator traveling in the opposite direction.
Emergency responders pronounced the driver of the SUV dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending notification of next of kin.
State police have not disclosed what caused the tractor-trailer driver to lose control, and the crash remains under investigation.
The collision prompted significant traffic disruptions throughout the area. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), northbound Interstate 279 was closed between the Bellevue/West View and Camp Horne Road interchanges as crews responded to the scene and began the investigation. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
PennDOT also announced that the outbound Interstate 579 High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes would remain closed until crews completed the scheduled directional switch ahead of the morning commute.
Officials have not provided an estimated timeline for reopening the affected sections of the interstate.
No additional injuries or further details were immediately released as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
